Mrs Holmes

School Days: 1997-2002
Type: Despotic, then gradually more human
Subject: History

If Mr Bronson had a female counterpart, it would have been Mrs Holmes. She started as a draconian disciplinarian at Grange Hill, even some of her colleagues were afraid of her! Fast-forward a couple of years and the dragon would turn into a pussy-cat. The fearsome Mrs Holmes evolved into a confident, more fair-minded woman, who cared about her students' problems where once she would have been completely unsympathetic. As a young woman Margaret was forced to give up her illegitimate son, Michael. Michael was reunited with his mum at Grange Hill (where he was supply-teaching) and they both made up for lost time.

Mrs Holmes was passionate about teaching. She expected a lot from her pupils and would do what was necessary to ensure compliance. While her colleagues tore their hair out as Ofsted inspectors visited Grange Hill, Mrs Holmes took it all in her stride, letting off steam by taking up karate! But a combination of her personal life, pupils turning against her and being worn down by the malevolent Mr Deverill proved too much for Mrs Holmes, forcing her to make an earlier than planned exit from Grange Hill.
