REASON FOR LEAVING: Took
early retirement after suffering a nervous breakdown.
School Days: 1997-2002
If Mr Bronson had a female counterpart, it would have
been Mrs Holmes. She started as a draconian disciplinarian
at Grange Hill, even some of her colleagues were afraid
of her! Fast-forward a couple of years and the dragon
would turn into a pussy-cat. The fearsome Mrs Holmes evolved
into a confident, more fair-minded woman, who cared about
her students' problems where once she would have been
completely unsympathetic. As a young woman Margaret was
forced to give up her illegitimate son, Michael. Michael
was reunited with his mum at Grange Hill (where he was
supply-teaching) and they both made up for lost time.
then gradually more human
Mrs Holmes was passionate about teaching. She expected
a lot from her pupils and would do what was necessary
to ensure compliance. While her colleagues tore their
hair out as Ofsted inspectors visited Grange Hill, Mrs
Holmes took it all in her stride, letting off steam
by taking up karate! But a combination of her personal
life, pupils turning against her and being worn down
by the malevolent Mr Deverill proved too much for Mrs
Holmes, forcing her to make an earlier than planned
exit from Grange Hill.
HOLMES' SCHOOL REPORT
20: Mrs Holmes insists Judi serves detention
because of her history project. She refuses to listen
when Judi explains about her mother's MS. Judi's social
worker makes a formal complaint and Holmes is reprimanded
by Mr Robson. Cracker dresses as Mrs Holmes during Year
7's lesson, but the real Holmes returns early and is not
Series 21: The staff fear Mrs Holmes will
be Grange Hill's new head teacher, after Mr McNab's
departure. Mr Robson gets the job but Holmes is made
deputy head. The Double Dare Gang expose Margaret's
morbid fear of mice!
Series 22: After missing
the start of term due to illness, Mrs Holmes supports
Gemma who is struggling to cope with her parents' divorce
- and the threat of being removed from Grange Hill.
Series 23: The
other staff are panicking about the coming Ofsted inspection,
but in the event Mrs Holmes takes it in her stride.
She takes part in Alec's sleepout for the homeless.
Series 24: Mrs Holmes
is spotted meeting a young man, with staff and pupils
assuming he's a toyboy! Margaret introduces him to her
colleagues as Michael, her long lost son.
Series 25: Margaret
takes charge at Grange Hill when Mr Robson is injured.
But the pressure of running the school, jealousy over
Michael's romance with Miss Fraser, working with Mr
Deverill and a pupil revolt pushes her over the edge.
Michael breaks up with Emily and goes to look after
